The compositions / improvisations on this page were done in collaboration with Roth Michaels, a brilliant improvisor and computer music expert. Our work centered around live audio processing: treating the instruments as controls and a source signals for real time audio processing and synthesis.
Before improvising, we would decide on some of the gestures, motives and phrases for a given improvised composition. The electronics were then ‘taught’ the parameters in which it could respond to the raw materials of the composition. As we improvised, Max/MSP responded to the basic gestures and motives of the work, sometimes unexpectedly, with its learned responses.
