• Functions of Consciousness. 2006. 6′
For clarinet, violin, cello and piano
Dedicated to and premiered by The New York New Music Ensemble.
Note:
The title Functions of Consciousness comes from Dreams, by Carl Jung.
In his book, Jung discusses how the conscious functions of intellect and
sensation cooperate with the unconscious functions of intuition and feeling.
I’ve always been fascinated by Jung’s work and a long-running theme in my
work has been exploring how counterpointed textures and timbres can
come in and out of focus much like unconscious feelings and desires
surfacing in the human experience.
